Program Description – Mortuary Science Practitioners, also known as funeral directors and morticians in the industry, are members of a human services profession, community members, and individuals involved in the funeral care profession. Pre-Mortuary Science is not a major at NDSU and does not lead to a degree. Students wishing to pursue a four-year bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science at the University of Minnesota may complete their first two years of pre-professional education at NDSU.  

Program Requirements – A 2-year (Associate degree) or 4-year (Bachelor’s degree) programme in mortuary science is required.  While requirements for licensure vary by state, four states in the United States (Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Oklahoma) require a four-year bachelor’s degree to practice as a funeral director. The American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) requires all students to take the National Board Exam before getting their degree.
